Another continent, and back the same night
From the Costa del Sol, Africa is just a coach ride and a ferry crossing away. This day trip crosses the Strait from Algeciras to Ceuta, takes you over the border into Morocco and spends the day in Tetouan with a local guide: the old Spanish quarter, the Jewish quarter, the medina, the souk and a Moroccan lunch.
From the coast to Algeciras and across the Strait
After pickup, the coach runs west along the Costa del Sol to the port of Algeciras, while the guide tells you about Morocco. There you board the fast ferry to Ceuta, approximately an hour across the Strait. There is no breakfast stop: the ferry is the moment for it.
Ceuta and the border
In Ceuta the coach drives past some of its landmarks, such as the Royal Walls and the San Felipe moat, before heading to the border. Have your passport ready: the guide takes care of the crossing. From there it is approximately 45 minutes to Tetouan, with a stop on the way for photos.
Tetouan
Approximately five hours in Tetouan, always with the local guide. The walk starts in the Plaza Moulay El Mehdi, the heart of the old Spanish quarter, with the cathedral of Our Lady of Victory — viewers of the series The Time in Between (El tiempo entre costuras) will recognise the round square. Then the narrow streets of the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, the Hassan II square with the Royal Palace, the souk with its craftsmen, and the medina, with its white walls and green doors, a World Heritage Site. Lunch is at a traditional restaurant, with music, and afterwards there is time for shopping with the group, including a visit to a Berber herbalist's with its natural products and argan oil.
Back to Spain
At the time the guide gives you, the group returns to Ceuta, takes the evening ferry to Algeciras and the coach takes you back to the same stop where you were picked up, late at night.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need?
A valid passport, for everyone, children included. Depending on your nationality you may also need a visa for Morocco: check before you book, because entry is your responsibility.
Is there free time in Tetouan?
No. The group always stays together with the guide: it is easy to get lost in the medina, and one person missing could delay the return of everyone to Spain.
What is included for lunch?
A typical Moroccan menu: harira soup, skewers, couscous, mint tea and pastries, with traditional music. Drinks are not included. If you have a food intolerance, tell us before the trip.
Is there a breakfast stop?
No. The best moment for breakfast is the ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta, a crossing of approximately an hour.
Why is it such a long day?
Because it adds up a coach to Algeciras, a ferry, a border and the same again on the way back. The ferry timetable and the time at the border do not depend on the guide, and on some days they make it longer.
Is it suitable for children?
It is not recommended for families with small children or pushchairs: it is a very long day, with a border crossing and a lot of walking. Children aged 0 to 12 pay the children's rate.
Can I join the group in Algeciras?
Yes. If you are staying near Tarifa or on the Costa de la Luz, you can drive to the port of Algeciras and choose it as your pickup point.
Can I bring my dog?
No. Pets are not allowed on this trip.
Can I cancel?
Yes, free of charge up to 48 hours before departure, with a full refund. After that, or if you don't show up, there is no refund.
More questions about Morocco and Tetouan
Can I visit Morocco during Ramadan?
Yes, the trip runs as usual. Shops may open later and close earlier, and it is harder to find alcohol. If you are not Muslim, avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day; your guide is used to non-Muslim visitors and won't mind.
What is the medina of Tetouan?
The old walled town, with whitewashed houses, green doors and narrow lanes full of workshops and stalls. It is a World Heritage Site, and the guide takes you through it.
Do the tours go inside monuments?
No. The guided tour of Tetouan is outdoors, through its squares, streets and markets, and no entrance fees are included.
Where does the ferry go?
From Algeciras to Ceuta, a Spanish city on the African coast, approximately an hour each way. From Ceuta the coach crosses the land border into Morocco.
