A village under the rock and a town over the gorge
Setenil de las Bodegas and Ronda are two of the most photographed towns in Andalusia, and they are only 17 kilometres apart. This day trip joins them up from the Costa del Sol: Setenil first, for its streets roofed by the rock, and then Ronda, on its own or with an official guide.
From the coast to Setenil
After pickup, the coach heads inland through the hills, past the white village of Ardales and Cuevas del Becerro. There is no breakfast stop on the way: Setenil is the place for it.
Setenil de las Bodegas
Setenil is famous for its houses built under huge overhangs of rock. You have approximately an hour and a half to walk it: the streets of Cuevas del Sol and Cuevas de la Sombra, down Calle Jabonería to the Plaza de Andalucía, without missing the little sign that says “Bésame en esta esquina” — “kiss me on this corner”.
Ronda on your own
From the bus station in Ronda the group splits by option. With the free option you have approximately four hours: the Plaza del Socorro, the bullring, the Paseo de Blas Infante with its views over the Tajo, the Puente Nuevo and the path down to its viewpoint, the city walls and the Arab baths, the Plaza de España, the Mondragón Palace and the Almocábar gate. A good loop finishes through the San Francisco quarter and the gardens of the Alameda del Tajo, and leaves time for lunch.
Ronda with an official guide
With the guided option, an official guide takes you for approximately an hour and a half: the Alameda del Tajo and its viewpoint, the surroundings of the Maestranza bullring and the Paseo de Blas Infante, then across the Puente Nuevo into the old town. Inside the Casa Museo Don Bosco, an early 20th-century house whose garden has one of the best views of the bridge, you taste the local sweet, the “yemas del Tajo”, with a glass of wine. The tour ends in the Plaza Duquesa de Parcent, with the town hall and the church of Santa María la Mayor, and leaves you approximately two and a half hours of free time.
Back to the coast
In the afternoon the whole group meets at Ronda bus station and the coach takes you back to the same stop where you were picked up.

Why are the houses in Setenil built under the rock?
The village grew along a narrow river gorge, and many houses were built against the cliff so that the rock itself became their roof. It is what gives some of its streets the look of a tunnel.
What is the Puente Nuevo?
The bridge that joins the two halves of Ronda across the Tajo gorge. Despite its name — the “new bridge” — it was finished in 1793, and it is the town's best-known monument. You see it best from the viewpoints on either side or from the path that goes down below it.
